Divine Rivals meets The Witch Haven in this romantic young adult fantasy in which a powerful mage posing as a debutante during the court social season must work with a member of the royal guard to catch a killer with powers much like her own.
In the city of Valora, where mages are feared and closely governed by the law, Pandora Small spends her life pretending to be someone she is not. Raised in seclusion by a shrouded guardian, Pandora learned to wield her magic in a way the world has never seen, making her more weapon than girl.

Pandora may have escaped her guardian, but powerful forces keep them bound together and she'll do anything to find them again to break their bond for good. Posing as an Ingenue, a well-off young woman with limited magic, Pandora hopes to gain access to the royal court's social season and the wealthy elite who make it their playing ground. Pandora's arrival at court becomes more complicated when Ellis Beacon, a promising young member of the royal guard, discovers the true scope of Pandora's deadly magic. Secretly sympathetic towards mages and convinced that Pandora is no harm to the public, Beacon agrees to keep her secret.

But when someone or something with powers terribly like Pandora's own begins killing her fellow Ingenues, Beacon must decide whether Pandora is truly innocent or if there's ruthless killer lying under her masterfully crafted facade. And Pandora will have to open up to gain Beacon's trust because joining forces may be the only way for Pandora to find her freedom and catch the real killer plaguing the city.

In an oppressive society, a mage and a guard struggle with secrets. In the nation of Hesperid, mages--those who utilize spellfire--undergo a binding rite by age 13 that fixes them to a patron and "tempers wild magic." Insubordination has a penalty of death, except for Ingenues, who have special privileges. New Ingenue Pandora Small is invited to summer at Palace Hill, home to Queen Maud. Unbeknownst to everyone, Pandora is an extremely powerful mage, who has already been bound to a patron--one she'll stop at nothing--even murder--to cut ties with. Ellis Beacon joins the Queen's Guard to fight hellions, monsters formed from the abundance of excess spellfire. Ellis' secret is his keen magesense; if anyone discovers how well he can sense magic, he'd be forced to become a magefinder, one of the ruthless guards who find and punish noncompliant mages. Due to a shortage of guards, Ellis is tasked with testing the incoming Ingenues. His discovery of the extent of Pandora's power surprises them both. But he's unwilling to expose her, and a friendship develops, putting both their lives in danger. Rule follower Ellis and ferocious Pandora come together in the most pleasing ways, and their introspective relationship slowly evolves. An especially delightful twist brings additional warmth to the narrative, and (coupled with an artfully depicted magic system) makes this work a success. Most characters read white. An adventure not to skip, told with enchantment and heart.(Fantasy. 14-18)

Gr 9 Up-In the city of Valora, magic is feared and must be controlled. According to the Mage Laws of Hesperid, every mage must be bonded to a patron, one that is freely chosen or assigned, for fear that they might grow too powerful and become too dangerous. Pandora Small, a young Ingenue, is secretly one such mage. Raised by a shrouded patron from whom she has escaped, Pandora is secretly a powerful mage whose magic is so strong that if anyone finds out, she will surely face a punishment of certain death in a steel box. Queen's Guard Ellis Beacon, a mage finder, senses her abilities, but inexplicably chooses not to turn her in. Despite Pandora's ongoing distrust of others, Pandora and Ellis become unlikely allies as she tries to discover the identity of her patron, and the two must work together to figure out who is killing other Ingenues with magic seemingly as powerful as Pandora's. Characters cue white. VERDICT With a Regency-style setting, likable protagonists, romance, plot twists, and complex worldbuilding, this magical mystery story will appeal to readers who enjoy their historical romance laced with strong fantasy elements.-Jessica Marie

Grades 9-12 In the land of Hesperia, magic powered by spellfire exists everywhere, and after a flood of wild magic broke out six years ago, it's more common than ever. The laws say that any girl who can command spellfire must be bound to a master, usually as a wife to a lord. Pandora Small has graduated to the status of Ingenue, a girl who will live in the palaces of Valora, owned by a lord, for her parlor magic: light, harmless illusions that ensure the rich and royal are entertained at parties. Pan was bound as a child--something almost unheard of--and she intends to find her first master to break the bond while pretending to be a perfect wife to another. Threatening her plan is the guard Beacon, who can sense that she has far more magic than an average Ingenue, and when it looks like her powers have been killing members of the court, they have to unwillingly work together. Weymouth is no stranger to creating interesting worlds, and this is a fun, romantic adventure in a new setting.
