"If a book could possess “French-Girl Style,” The Bombshell would have it... effortlessly cool: a smart, sophisticated tale of sexual and political awakening over the course of a fateful summer.”—New York Times Book Review

"An escapist, Hollywood-ready excursion to Corsica."—Vogue

"A lush, cinematic and propulsive novel filled with sex, violence, glamor and a true revolutionary spirit. It's a towering literary achievement."—Adam Johnson, Pulitzer Prize winner

Corsica, 1993. As a sun-drenched Mediterranean summer heads into full swing, beautiful and brash seventeen-year-old Séverine Guimard is counting down the days until graduation, dreaming of stardom while smoking cigarettes, and seducing boys in her class to pass the time. The pampered French American daughter of a politician, Séverine knows she’s destined for bigger things.
That is, until one night, Séverine is snatched off her bike by a militant trio fighting for Corsican independence and held for a large ransom. When the men fumble negotiating her release, the four become unlikely housemates deep in the island’s remote interior. Eager to gain the upper hand, Séverine sets out to charm her captors, and soon the handsome, intellectual leader, Bruno, the gentle university student, Tittu, and even the gruff, unflappable Petru grow to enjoy the company of their headstrong hostage.
As Séverine is exposed to the group’s politics, they ignite something unexpected within her, and their ideas begin to take root. With her flair for the spotlight and newfound beliefs, Séverine becomes the face of a radical movement for a global TV audience. What follows is a summer of passion and terror, careening toward an inevitable, explosive conclusion, as Séverine steps into the biggest role of her life.
An electric novel by an extraordinary new talent, The Bombshell is filled with seduction and fervor, and explores the wonders and perils of youthful idealism, the combustibility of celebrity, and the sublime force of young love.

In 1993 Corsica, a kidnapped teen conspires with her captors to incite an uprising. If it were up to her, 17-year-old Sverine Guimard would be spending her final semesters of lyce in Paris with her friends. Instead, the aspiring actress is enduring a lonely year at an unfamiliar school on Corsica, where her French politician father is prefect. A listless Sverine is riding her bike alone one night when men grab her, bind her, and stuff her in their vehicle's trunk. They drive her to a secluded cottage deep in the scrublands and lock her in a closet. Sverine's abductors--Soffiu di Libert, a trio seeking Corsica's independence from France--demand 5 million francs and the release of a political prisoner (their fourth member) in exchange for Sverine's safe return. Sverine's wealthy parents promptly pay up, but France's interior minister, presidential hopeful Bernard Jonnart, refuses to negotiate. After a weeklong stalemate, the young men debate killing Sverine, but instead relocate her to a sparsely furnished outbuilding while they plot their next move. Out of boredom and attempted ingratiation, Sverine begins discussing political philosophy with teacher Bruno, foraging with ecology student Tittu, and cooking with chef Petru. Camaraderie develops, and--deciding she wants "stardom, her future, now"--Sverine joins Soffiu di Libert, using her beauty, charisma, and sex appeal to garner press, while also pushing the cell in an increasingly radical direction. No rebellion comes without casualties, however. Though far from breezy, Farr's accomplished debut deftly balances heady ruminations on colonialism and revolution with relatable human moments. Too many obstacles are too easily overcome, but vibrant prose lends texture and urgency, while the fully fleshed characters' increasingly thorny interpersonal relationships raise the story's stakes and give it soul. A passionate powder keg of a novel.

In Salvadoran American Farr's well-crafted first novel, it is the summer of 1993 on the island of Corsica. Sverine Guimard, 17 years old, the indulged only daughter of an influential French official and an American heiress, is kidnapped by members of an obscure Corsican independence group. In addition to ransom money, her captors demand the release of a political prisoner, and everyone is stunned when the French government refuses to comply. Sverine's charismatic persona emerges as she devises strategies to keep herself alive, forging deepening and even poignant bonds with her three kidnappers. Sexually attracted to the group's leader, Bruno, and eager to please, Sverine starts making videos, first claiming solidarity with her captors before becoming increasingly militant, to the point of participating in terrorist acts that end in horrific tragedy. Farr's main characters are carefully drawn, their relationships develop realistically, and the action is taut and suspenseful. The final chapters, set in 2013, bring this auspicious debut to a satisfying conclusion.
